Like all consumer products, laundry detergents are promoted through targeted ad campaigns designed to create loyalty to a particular brand. Marketing departments for detergent manufacturers have one primary goal: to convince you that their detergent is better than the one sitting next to it on the shelf. Of course, critics claim that all laundry detergents do the same thing, so you might as well just buy the cheapest.
It turns out that for everyday usage, the brand name is not nearly as important as the formulation. Different formulations are designed to do different things, and switching them up could have unsatisfactory results. But which manufacturer made a particular formulation does not really matter. For gross, heavily stained laundry, though, the brand name does matter more than you might imagine.
Laundry detergents use a variety of chemicals to clean your clothes, and any one of them could theoretically trigger an allergic reaction or sensitivity. The most common trigger is added fragrance. If you are sensitive to any common detergent additives, select a detergent that is hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin. Many brands feature such a detergent, usually with the word “Free” on the label. In addition, some people with sensitivities prefer “Natural” detergents, although it is possible to be allergic or sensitive to natural ingredients as well.
High Efficiency Detergent
If you have a high efficiency washing machine, you need a high efficiency laundry detergent, available in many different brands. The reason is that high efficiency washers do not use enough water to fully rinse away the suds created by traditional detergents. High efficiency laundry detergents are designed to clean laundry with a minimum of suds, ensuring that the rinsing is complete.
High efficiency detergent can also be used in a standard washer, but be careful not to overdo it. Do not use more than 1/4 cup of high efficiency detergent per load.
Cold Water Detergent
Cold water washing is essential for very bright or dark colors, as well some types of stains including blood. In addition, many people are switching to cold water washing for all or part of their regular laundry. Thanks to the cold water washing trend, some manufacturers now make laundry detergents that are specifically designed for this use. You can also use standard laundry detergent, but you will need to go through a process of trial and error, as some work better than others in cold water.
For those whose laundry is only lightly or moderately dirty, there are very few differences between different brands of laundry detergent. All of them will get your clothes clean. For those who have small children, messy eaters, or athletes in the house, though, it is important to select a laundry detergent that can stand up to the challenge. In this case, brand matters.
If you need a laundry detergent with heavy-duty cleaning power and top-notch stain removal, check the professional reviews from Consumer Reports or a similar publication. These reviews rank different brands of detergent based on independent product testing, and can help you decide which offers the cleaning power you need.
